Offering an array of programming including live music, theatre, contemporary dance, educational workshops, and community celebrations, the Playhouse enriches the lives of residents and visitors alike.
With a 290-seat theatre, a versatile community event space, a commercial kitchen, a community fridge, and an art gallery, Kings Playhouse is more than just a venue—it’s an essential piece of cultural and community life in Eastern PEI.
Our Story
As Canada’s longest-running theatre, Kings Playhouse has hosted legends like Harry Houdini, Donald Sutherland, Mary Pickford, Daniel Lanois, Sarah Bernhardt and Don Messer while also providing a warm welcome for countless community events since 1898.
Designed by famed architect William Critchlow Harris, the Playhouse was built in 1898 as a multi-purpose town hall and theatre, renowned as a favourite venue for local and touring performers. Despite a devastating fire in 1983, the community rallied together to rebuild, reopening the Playhouse to great fanfare in 1984. Since then, Kings Playhouse has flourished as a vibrant community cultural centre, welcoming the community, showcasing Canada’s best talent and hosting acclaimed artists from across the globe.
